Desktop PDM

Structural Dynamics Research Corp.

Desktop PDM manages the creation and use of product definition datathrough the registration of "objects" in a networked data repository.Object-oriented technology enables the capture of attributes which definemethods for search, retrieval and use of the definition data throughoutthe product development cycle. The result is a context-sensitive environment which allows each user toemploy his or her tools and data in a simple, consistent fashion.Desktop PDM extends this intuitive framework to encompass entireheterogeneous computing environments in support of the interactiveteamwork necessary for successful product development.Desktop PDM provides the functionality necessary for team collaborationon critical design issues. Since all object information is updated at thetime of an action, team members are kept abreast of changes. Desktop PDMalso tracks the interrelationships of design objects -- such as source, derivative, reference, version, and revision information -- to assuredesign integrity according to a "master model" concept of operation. >LPDesktop PDM is based on a standard client-server architecture that canaddress a given organization's needs -- from a highly interactive taskteam to multi-tiered enterprise-wide implementations. Linkingrepositories accommodates the needs of large organizations withoutforfeiting performance, and promotes team interaction in diversesituations including supplier and remote site interaction.Desktop PDM includes capabilities to "encapsulate" product data as it iscreated in other applications. This capability allows application usersto concentrate on getting their job done as Desktop PDM captures allrelevant information about the data being created. Included with DesktopPDM is encapsulation for Autodesk's AutoCAD for drafting with otherencapsulations available at extra cost.A robust, easy-to-use desktop environment utilizes industry standards tographically present data and tools to users. Variable preferences allowusers to personalize the desktop, while administrators may prepare anddistribute different desktop views to different groups of users. All ofthese factors work together to reduce the need for user training andincrease users' productivity. >LP Enterprise-wide tracking of metadatasurrounding the design elements at the time of creation or modificationensures that information is both up-to-date and managed according toorganizational rules. Folder concepts group data, regardless of type, tomirror the organization's perspective.Data search and retrieval takes advantage of enterprise-wide capabilitiesand uses multiple criteria to reduce search time. Multiple views allowusers in different groups to have their own view of product definitiondata. Application launch is context-sensitive and takes placeautomatically when an object has been selected for use. Automatic andtransparent handling of data requiring transport and translation orarchive and backup retrieval are supported so that users can concentrateon mission-critical activities. Access to data is controlled through"check-out"/"check-in" procedures to maintain its integrity and eliminateconcurrency problems. >LP Scalable, modular, standards-based solutionsensure that your systems can grow as your organization grows.Integration tools and inherent independence from platforms andapplications allow sites to flexibly implement and update their PDMsystem at lower overall costs.
